Transparency in a community: showing where the money goes

Most disputes in a community aren't about the amount — they're about not knowing. "Why was I charged this much?" "Where did the road money go?" "But I paid!" Transparent records answer those questions before anyone asks them.

Where distrust comes from

  • Charges appear without explanation, so nobody can tell how the amount was reached.
  • Payments live in a spreadsheet only the treasurer can see.
  • The history lives in someone's memory, and leaves when the board changes.

Everyone sees their own

The first step is giving each member access to their own numbers. In CoreUnison every member has a page of their own: their units, meters, charges, payments and balance. Every charge is tied to a service and a unit, and a metered charge to an approved reading.

Public or private

The next step is showing where the shared money goes. A CoreUnison organization can be public, so every member sees the community's overall income and spending. If your community prefers, it can stay private, and everyone sees only their own. It's your call.

History that doesn't get lost

Every reading, charge and payment is kept with its unit. When an owner or the board changes, the history stays put. Any "but I paid" can be checked in a minute.

Transparency is also about rules

  • Publish your tariffs, and change them in the open.
  • Agree on when readings are due.
  • Share your payment details: in CoreUnison they go out with every bill email, and the board marks a payment once the money reaches the community's account.
